going with the flow

Is wedding planning taking its toll on your stress levels?

Floatation tanks are the closest thing to climbing back into the womb; no outside influence, no mental or physical stress, and all concept of time left behind.

Delving so much deeper into self-healing than a simple saltwater bath, floatation tanks are enjoying a wave of popularity in the fitness and wellbeing market, where they’re considered the ultimate elixir for weary bones and minds.

Not for the claustrophobic; most floatation tanks are designed to be both sound and light proof in order to give your brain the best chance of switching off in uninterrupted solitude. The highly concentrated Epsom salt solution is the key ingredient, creating incredible buoyancy which enhances the state of blissful oblivion.

American sport commentator, Joe Rogan, has been a key influence in the global demand for ‘sensory deprivation’, extolling the virtues of floatation tanks in a series of podcasts and blogs.

“You will learn more about yourself than any other way,” he says. “When you’re in the tank it’s a different kind of being alone. It makes you see the whole picture with crystal clear clarity. You have no body sensation at all – it’s just the mind with no connection to any input, so there aren’t any distractions.”

Floatation tanks originally developed from research undertaken during the 1950s by American physician and neuroscientist Dr John C. Lilly investigating the impact on the brain when it is denied external stimulation. The idea has since evolved and centres offer one hour float sessions in specially designed 'Dreampods' which provide, ‘tension release, allowing the body to restore and giving the mind a chance
to expand awareness and evolve.’

“The incredible silence and stillness inside the pod allows you to achieve a deep meditative state of theta-brainwaves which simulates a therapeutic dream-like state to the extent that one hour of floating can be equivalent to four hours of restful sleep,” explains Nitel Mimi from Gravity Floatation Centre.

There are added physical benefits, with floating said to restore primal body posture and joint mobility and release musculoskeletal tension by removing the sensation of gravity. Tanks have also effectively eased stress and anxiety, migraines, insomnia and other ailments.

And to think it’s all as simple as just going with the flow…
